Union JACK Radio relaunches award-winning new music show Underdogs

New series of hit new music show kicks off with a two-hour show broadcast live from a farm in Dorset, co-hosted by local band, Galaxy Thief

10 September 2019, Oxford: Union JACK radio can today announce the relaunch of its award-winning new music show, Underdogs: a show dedicated to breaking the best new British music and which is responsible for playing more unsigned acts, daily, than BBC Radio 1, Absolute Radio and Radio X. Underdogs, which is given a comedic twist by its hapless presenter Lucy Leeds – who really knows nothing about new music…or music…or anything really – returns weekly from Wednesday 18 September 2019, 7pm to 9pm.

First launched in 2017, Underdogs has since received over 3,500 submissions from British bands. It returns with a special two-hour live opening show, which will be broadcast from a farm in Dorset, co-hosted by Swanage-based band, Galaxy Thief, who will also perform live from the farm in front of an audience of listeners.

Union JACK’s Programme Director, Giles Gear, said: “Union JACK’s Underdogs is a genuine alternative to other new music shows out there, providing a national platform for new music, but one on which the musicians can have a laugh and don’t have to take themselves too seriously. Through Lucy’s chaotic, misinformed style of presenting, we’ve created a new music show that is brilliantly unique, completely hilarious, and which has got British acts clamoring to be a part of it.”

Underdogs – which was nominated for ‘Best Comedy/Entertainment Show’ at the National Radio Awards just six weeks after launching, pitched against Frank Skinner and BBC Radio 1 - was born out of a desire to create a music show that breaks the very best new British music. Its unconventional and somewhat haphazard presenter ensures that bands join in and have a laugh, resulting in listeners enjoying a much more open and honest style of interview.

Union JACK radio has always had British music at its heart, launching with a completely new concept in radio that allows its listeners to select the music, via an app that boasts the most extensive playlist in UK radio history. It also plays the best of British comedy, cleverly intertwining classic comedy clips with innovative new comedic programming formats.

Union JACK is available across the UK on digital radio, online at unionjack.co.uk and via the Union JACK app.
