Legendary broadcaster Jim Rosenthal becomes the voice of Union JACK Radio

19 November 2019, Oxford: National digital radio station Union JACK can today announce that it has signed legendary broadcaster Jim Rosenthal as the new voice of the ever-growing station, following the death of the station’s former voice, actor Paul Darrow, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Rosenthal is one of the nation’s most respected presenters and commentators, best-known for his work in sport, becoming a household name through his coverage of many sports including football, rugby, boxing and athletics. His presenting plaudits include eight FIFA World Cups, three Rugby World Cups, two Olympic Games and more than 150 Formula One races.

Much like JACK Radio Group, which includes two national radio stations (Union JACK, JACK Radio) and three regional radio stations (JACKfm, JACK2 Hits and JACK3 Chill), Rosenthal was born in Oxford. His witty and erudite presenting style make him the perfect fit for Union JACK Radio, which has made a name for itself playing the best of British music and comedy, and which entertains its audience in between songs and programmes with a quirky sense of humour, entertaining anecdotes and amusing insights.

Rosenthal said of his appointment: “This is one of my biggest challenges yet – Paul Darrow was a legend. I’m delighted to have been asked to take over his microphone and look forward to the fun and games of working with the ever so slightly anarchic Union JACK Radio!”

Ian Walker, CEO of Union JACK Radio, said: “Finding a new voice for Union JACK Radio was always going to be hard following the death of our good friend Paul Darrow – whose voice will also remain on the station for the foreseeable – but we couldn’t be happier with our recruitment of the British broadcasting icon that is Jim Rosenthal. As well as sharing our provenance, Jim crucially shares our sense of humour and will be bringing it to life with his intelligent and quick-witted style of presenting.”

Union JACK broke new ground when it launched in 2016 announcing a format that saw the audience select the music in its entirety, via an app boasting the most extensive playlist in UK radio. Today, the station has become one of the fastest growing in commercial radio and one of the last remaining independent commercial radio groups, with a complete focus on the best of British music and comedy, and an array of both high-profile and emerging comedic talent featured across the station’s schedule.

Current shows of note include Mark Dolan’s Asking for a Friend, a comedy panel show answering the questions you never dared ask, Geoff Lloyd’s Hometown Glory, which sees some of Britain’s best-loved comedians and famous faces take a virtual trip down memory lane with acclaimed broadcaster Geoff Lloyd, and Josh Berry’s Fake News, which sees hilarious impressionist Josh Berry provide his own take on the current news agenda.

Union JACK is available across the UK on digital radio, online at unionjack.co.uk and via the Union JACK app.
